Introduction
Since Johannes Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press in the 15th century, books have been distributed across towns, countries, and even oceans. As a result, readers all over the world have delighted in stories both realistic and fantastical. However, not all readers are pleased with every story.
When individuals are offended by information or stories in books, they sometimes challenge a book’s presence in a local school, library, or town. Sometimes such challenges are successful, resulting in a ban of the book in a particular institution or town. Sometimes these challenges are unsuccessful, and the book merely gains greater visibility or even notoriety.
The book we will be reading this quarter, Lord of the Flies, has been a banned book. This project asks you to investigate the reasons why some books are challenged or banned, and to give your opinion. Your final project will be based around a piece of technology we can share with the Granadino community.
Essential Questions
--- Why are books challenged or banned?
--- Why is access to books important?
--- What impact do book bans/challenges have on authors? On young adult readers? On communities?
--- Should students have the right to choose the books they read?
